Overlooked Inflammation-What's Under Your Control

The following are 3 areas that most people don’t consider when it comes to disease and how chronic inflammation plays a significant role. Inflammation is involved in a lot of chronic conditions but these are three you can control.

Oral Health

  • Connection: Poor oral hygiene and untreated dental issues, such as gum disease (periodontitis), can lead to systemic inflammation. The bacteria and toxins from oral infections can enter the bloodstream, triggering an immune response throughout the body.
  • Evidence: Studies have linked gum disease to chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, all of which are exacerbated by systemic inflammation.
  • Tip: Regular dental check-ups, brushing, and flossing multiple times a day can help reduce inflammation caused by oral health issues. Reducing the amount of processed food products can also be beneficial.

Environmental Toxins

  • Connection: Chronic exposure to environmental toxins, such as air pollution, pesticides, and heavy metals, can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation. These toxins disrupt the body’s natural detoxification processes and trigger immune responses.
  • Evidence: Airborne pollutants have been directly linked to lung and cardiovascular inflammation, while toxins like BPA (found in plastics) are associated with hormonal imbalances and inflammation.
  • Tip: Minimize toxin exposure by using natural cleaning products, water filtration, eliminating microwave use, avoiding plastics with BPA, and investing in air purifiers.

Chronic Low-Grade Stress

  • Connection: Long-term psychological stress triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which, when elevated for prolonged periods, can lead to a persistent inflammatory state.
  • Evidence: Chronic stress has been shown to increase levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can contribute to autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular issues, and even mental health conditions like depression.
  • Tip: Incorporate stress-reducing practices like mindfulness, yoga, or regular nature walks into your daily routine. Perfection has to be a thing of the past.
